Friday, May 19, 2017

7:30 am

Graduates report to assigned classroom in White-Gravenor Hall or the Intercultural Center (ICC) to robe. Candidates are put into alphabetical order by program, given hooding instructions, and given name cards at this time. Lineup commences shortly afterwards. Final reporting rooms/locations will be emailed out and posted in early May on the Graduate School Commencement webpage. Please note that reporting time on May 19 will be no later than 7:30 a.m., and you should allow extra time for getting to and across campus to your robing/line up locations.
In the event that the University makes the Rain Plan announcement, all candidates are to report directly to the McDonough Gymnasium for line up and check in no later than 7:30 am on Friday, May 19, 2017 (see Rain Plan segment below for more details).

Graduate School Main Commencement Ceremony begins.

10:30 am

First portion of the Ceremony concludes (Ph.D. Graduates only are now finished with their Ceremony and are dismissed). Recessional from Healy Lawn. BGE Master's candidates continue to march to the McDonough Gymnasium for the Diploma Distribution Ceremony. We encourage all Master's candidates to remain in order during the recessional parade from Healy lawn to the McDonough Gymnasium to help maintain the lineup at the BGE diploma distribution ceremony.

BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony begins in the McDonough Gymnasium.

12 pm
noon

BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony concludes. Our graduation reception will be held on the Leavey Center Esplanade immediately following the Diploma Distribution Ceremony. Professional photo booths will be at the Commencement Reception to capture snapshots of this momentous day!

Graduate School Main Ceremony at 9:00am

The Graduate School Main Commencement Ceremony will start at 9:00 am on the Healy Lawn. (The Rain Site is at the McDonough Gymnasium)

Rain Plan

The rain site for the Main Graduate School Commencement Ceremony is at the McDonough Gymnasium.

In the event of inclement weather, the University will make an announcement at 6:00 a.m. the morning of commencement day on the Georgetown University Commencement page and students will be notified via email right away. Once the announcement is made, all candidates are to report directly to the McDonough Gymnasium for line up and check in.

Rain announcements will also be available through our University Weather line at (202) 687-SNOW.

Check-in Robing and Lineup

Final reporting rooms/locations will be emailed out and posted in early May on the Graduate School Commencement webpage.

All commencement participants are to report to their assigned room no later than 7:30 am on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Students should have received an email from the Graduate School in early May containing exact reporting rooms and locations in either White-Gravenor Hall or Intercultural Center (ICC) Building.

Overview of the Main Graduate School Commencement Ceremony

  • Faculty and Graduates marching into the stage area of Healy Lawn.
  • Students and Faculty will be seated and there are welcomes and brief speeches from various University Officials
  • PhD students are then called by name, and walk across the stage to be congratulated by the Dean and other University Officials before receiving their diplomas.
  • Following this, Master's students are asked to stand by degree to have their degree's conferred (Note that Master's students do not cross the stage during the Main Commencement Ceremony).
  • Following the conferral of degrees and brief closing remarks, the faculty and students are marched out of the Healy Lawn stage area.
  • BGE Master's candidates march in recessional through the Leavey Center towards McDonough Gymnasium for their Diploma Distribution Ceremony.
  • We encourage all Master's candidates to remain in order during the recessional parade from Healy lawn to the McDonough Gymnasium to help maintain the lineup at the BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony.
  • Graduates may take pictures with family and friends at the conclusion of the Diploma Distribution Ceremony.

BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony at 11:00AM

The Office of Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) will hold a Diploma Distribution Ceremony at the McDonough Gymnasium at 11:00 am on Friday, May 19, 2017 (rain or shine). Immediately following the Main Graduate School Commencement Ceremony, marshals will lead Master's candidates to the McDonough Gymnasium. To all Master's candidates, please remain in order during the recessional parade from the Main Commencement Ceremony to the McDounough Gymnasium to help maintain the lineup at the BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony. The BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony provides the opportunity for certificate and master’s candidates to be individually recognized for their academic achievements. Please join the graduates and faculty for our graduation reception on the Leavey Center Esplanade immediately following the Diploma Distribution Ceremony. Professional photo booths will be at the Commencement Reception to capture snapshots of this momentous day!
 
Seats for guests at McDonough Gymnasium is on a first come, first seated basis. No tickets are required.

Logistics

Academic Regalia

All graduates participating in Commencement are required to wear the appropriate academic regalia, (consisting of gown, hood, cap and tassel). Students showing up without regalia will not be allowed to participate in the Ceremony. Standard regalia will be available for purchase in the University Bookstore the week of Commencement (Monday – Thursday only, May 15-18, 2017 from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) as well as over the phone (call Jostens at 1-800-548-5452 for more information).

Please note: The Bookstore will not be open early enough on Commencement Day, Friday, May 19, 2017, so please have your entire academic regalia purchased and on hand no later than Thursday, May 18, 2017. If you have any other questions about regalia, please see the Graduate School’s academic regalia webpage or contact the Georgetown University Bookstore directly.

Caps and Gowns Distribution

The distribution of caps and gowns will be at the Georgetown University Bookstore from Monday, May 15- Thursday, May, 18, 2017.

Directions and Parking

Parking in the Southwest Quad or offsite at the Harris Building – Drivers MUST tell the parking booth attendant that they are here for the Graduate School Commencement Ceremony; otherwise the attendant will charge you and your guests for parking. Parking on and near the Georgetown campus is EXTREMELY limited. You are encouraged to use mass transit or taxicabs to the Healy Gate at 37th and O Streets, N.W., if at all possible. The general University Commencement website provides some very important information about parking and transportation during Commencement week. 

Handicap Accessibility at Commencement


At the Main Graduate School Commencement Ceremony

At the Main Graduate School Commencement Ceremony, there will be special seating for your handicapped guest and 1 attendant (the rest of your guests should take seats in the general seating areas). Wheelchairs are available by advance reservation or may be rented on a first-come first-served basis the day of Commencement. Please contact Amanda Ruthven at the Graduate School (with SUBJ: Accessibility) as soon as possible to directly request and reserve seating and/or a wheelchair to use.


At the BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony

At the BGE Diploma Distribution Ceremony, there will be handicap seating reserved near the front of the ballroom on a first come, first seated basis.

Diploma Information

The diploma dimensions is 17 inches (43 cm) wide by 14 inches(35.5 cm) high. The diploma is written in Latin and an English translation is provided with your diploma. Diploma frames are available at the Georgetown University Bookstore in Leavey Center.

Commencement Photography

We ask that you remind your family and guests that they MAY NOT approach the stage during any part of the Main Ceremony as well as the Biomedical Graduate Diploma Distribution Ceremony to take photos. The time for family photographs will be immediately after the conclusion of the Biomedical Graduate Diploma Distribution Ceremony.

A professional photographer from GradImages will be taking pictures during the Main Commencement and the Biomedical Graduate Diploma Distribution Ceremony. These photos will be available for purchase and you will be contacted by mail after the Ceremony by GradImages on how to view/purchase photographs.
