Keira Williams

2016 Hoyas for Science Scholarship Recipient

Name: Keira Williams
Undergrad School: Spelman College
Undergrad Major: Biology
MS Program/Concentration: Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Why did you apply to Georgetown University?
I was impressed with the opportunity to study at an accomplished institution such as Georgetown, and believed it would provide a pathway to my interests in the medical field.

As a Hoyas for Science Scholarship recipient, you were selected because your application to Georgetown “demonstrated a commitment to biomedical research and graduate studies at the Masters’ level.” What do you hope to accomplish here at Georgetown and/or what is your interest in biomedical research or graduate studies?
While at Georgetown working towards my master’s, I hope to gain research experience in a lab that focuses on CAM modalities. As a student at Spelman, I conducted biological research that focused on sexual activity in amoeba. Although my research experience at Spelman was both engaging and informative, I would like to have a new and unique research experience where I can see CAM techniques in action and how scientists practice studying and exploring CAM therapies. I believe that the knowledge I gain in class as well as the experiences that I gain outside of class through research, seminars and related efforts, will give me a unique perspective as I apply for medical school following the completion of the program. In addition, the coursework throughout the program should deepen my science foundation. As a prospective physician, I think that it is important to engage in a range of medically related experiences that will expose me to the various aspects of healthcare, and help me to become a knowledgeable and informed physician. I believe that the CAM program, and the numerous resources and opportunities at Georgetown will do this as I learn about an aspect of medical treatment that I have not previously explored in depth.

What is something interesting or unique about you that very few people know?
An interesting fact about me is I love to stay active! I danced, mostly ballet, but also jazz and modern, from the age of 5 through high school, and then practiced Tae Kwon Do. I am only one belt away from my black belt!
