Soha & Saher Shah

What made you choose Georgetown University for your M.S. degree?

Saher: It’s an honor and privilege to be attending Georgetown University. I chose Georgetown University because of its rigorous academic curriculum that will help me challenge myself and grow to be more successful in my academic career. The networking opportunities and the opportunity of a lifetime to experience the Georgetown experience.

Soha: I chose Georgetown university because its Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology Master’s program is perfectly tailored to my interests due to the curriculums strong emphasis on science communication skills and solving major health problems.

What sparked your interest in the biomedical field?

Soha: I worked part-time in an internal medicine clinic for about 2 years and was a biology major in undergrad. I wish to combine my experiences in both science and the clinic to pursue a deeper understanding of biomedical education.

Saher: My years during undergrad at Marymount University, piqued my interest in the biomedical field including my experiences in undergraduate research.

When people come to you for help, what do they usually want help with?

Saher: People come to me for help for several reasons, the biggest comes through my alias the “Pakistani Martha Stewart.” I bring light to many societal issues and discuss many topics that resonate with South Asian millennials. Through this popular persona I have been able to provide support, advice and allow a platform for healthy discussion.

Soha: I worked as a peer science tutor during undergrad so many students would come to me for help in studying and completing assignments. Outside of academia, I help my sister manage and create content for her brand called, The Pakistani Martha Stewart.

What is something you’ve been meaning to try, but just haven’t gotten around to yet?

Soha: I have always been passionate about traveling to South Korea but haven’t done so yet! My obsession with Korean culture developed right after high school when I started watching Korean dramas. I was international club president in high school so I really appreciate different cultures and experiencing them first hand.

Saher: Since last year, my goal has been to try and not be comfortable. As I see it, when you are comfortable you are less likely to try new things, take risks and learn from mistakes. I want to step out of my comfort zone whenever I can to be able to learn and add to my experiences.
