Georgetown’s NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a reflection of Georgetown’s excellent record of training students to integrate clinical care with research in biomedicine and especially in bioethics, program leaders said. The grant will allow the School of Medicine to expand its dual-degree enrollment and provide new academic resources.

NIH MSTP Award Advances Georgetown’s Vision for Physician-Scientist Training
From Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine: Georgetown has been awarded its first National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) grant to support the training of MD/PhD students. This award recognizes the strength of our physician-scientist training program and our vision for preparing leaders who will shape the future of medicine.

A combination of two immunotherapy drugs showed encouraging activity when added to standard chemotherapy given prior to surgery for patients with high-risk, early-stage HER2-negative breast cancer, according to phase 2 clinical trial results from the ongoing I-SPY2 clinical trial platform. This exact treatment regimen will not advance for further study in other patients, as researchers found excess toxicities when combining the two immunotherapies. However, the outcome demonstrates the promise of improved outcomes with novel immunotherapy combinations.
