Casey Aveggio (’24)

Technical Analyst
RAND Corporation
I’m convinced that the recommendations I received from my professors is what made the difference in getting hired at RAND immediately after graduation.
About Casey
Casey graduated in 2024 with an M.S. in Biohazardous Threat Agents & Emerging Infectious Diseases.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students looking to get into your line of work?
Apply for everything, even if you don’t think you qualify! I got my current position by applying for a different job that said it required a Ph.D. (which I don’t have). Obviously I was underqualified, but the person who reviewed my resume thought I would be perfect for the job I ended up getting – and it wasn’t even being advertised. I wouldn’t have this job if I hadn’t applied for something there was no chance of me getting.
What strategies did you use to build your network and find job opportunities?
I joined a lot of global health security/One Health email distribution lists, both to stay up to date as well as learn about new opportunities.
What Georgetown career development resources did you find useful for attaining your career goals?
Getting to know my professors. The biosecurity world is small, especially in D.C. I’m convinced that the recommendations I received from my professors is what made the difference in getting hired at RAND immediately after graduation.
