BGE Career Outcomes Publication Highlights an Important Role for Masters Degrees in Enriching the Scientific Workforce

Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) leverages the expertise of their faculty, clinical collaborators, and industry partners to develop one to two-year interdisciplinary master’s programs that provide students with scientific skills and practical experiential learning opportunities to advance their careers. To date, there is very little published on the outcomes of biomedical graduate degree recipients to evaluate the effectiveness of graduate programs and to inform the return on investment for students. 

In a recent paper, BGE education researchers show the first five-year career outlook for master of science graduates from biomedical master’s programs. Post-graduate outcomes were analyzed for 1,204 graduates across 15 BGE MS programs, who completed their degrees between 2014–2018. The authors  found that 69% of graduates entered the workforce, while 28% entered an advanced degree program such as a research-focused Ph.D., allopathic or osteopathic medicine (M.D. or D.O.), or an advanced health professions degree. Furthermore, graduates utilize their analytical skills in their post grad careers, as 59% of graduates who entered the workforce after graduation conduct research-based job functions across industries.
