BGE Joins Georgetown University School of Medicine
BGE sent the following email to current students on July 1, 2025:
Dear BGE students,
We’re pleased to announce that starting today, Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) has moved from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) to Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM). The medical school now includes Medical Education (the M.D. program) and BGE, with the leadership structure outlined by Dr. Norman Beauchamp, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, in an announcement to the GUMC community last Friday.
Our students, faculty and staff stand to benefit from being part of the School of Medicine, founded in 1851 as the first Catholic medical school in the United States. Like BGE, GUSOM is guided by Georgetown values including cura personalis (care of the whole person) and service to others. BGE will be empowered to expand our collaborations within GUSOM; leverage GUSOM resources; and join our name and our impact to the prestige of a 174-year-old institution.
As Dr. Beauchamp indicated in his announcement:
“This convergence allows us to expand the coordination between education and research efforts for our T32-funded PhD programs and our array of master degree programs, and in the future, offer more dual MD/MS degrees. Also, as a school, BGE will have a stronger platform from which to develop new programs – some are in development in allied health fields. We can also better leverage BGE offerings in collaboration with other Georgetown schools to develop accelerated BS/MS pathways for college undergraduates across the university and we anticipate other growth opportunities.”
What do these changes mean for you as a BGE student?
- All BGE students now belong to the Georgetown University School of Medicine. You may now include the School of Medicine on your resume, LinkedIn page, etc.!
- Students graduating after July 1 will receive their diplomas from the School of Medicine. We will share details for May 2026 Commencement in the coming months.
- As our BGE programs move to the School of Medicine, GSAS is reorganizing to become the Joint Office of Graduate Studies (JOGS), an administrative office that supports graduate education across the university. You may see the Joint Office of Graduate Studies (JOGS) name instead of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) in reference to admissions, finances, graduation, GAGE-AFT, etc.
Thank you for your attention to these updates!
