Funding Policies
GAGE-AFT Union
BGE Ph.D. students are covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Georgetown University and the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees – American Federation of Teachers (GAGE-AFT).
T32 Training Grants
BGE programs host several NIH-funded, externally peer-reviewed institutional training programs, which support many of our Ph.D. students as they contribute to our research enterprise across many disciplines.
International Students
Students from outside the United States must adjust to a new country and a different set of financial rules and opportunities. The Office of Global Services’ Financial Aid & Money Matters page offers guidance for funding and paying graduate school expenses.
International students may wish to consider private education loans to meet college expenses. You may be required by the lender to get a credit worthy co-signer who is a U.S. Citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen.
Military and Veterans
Servicemembers and veterans should visit the University Registrar’s Veterans page for guidance on accessing education benefits. You can find further support via Georgetown’s Military and Veterans’ Resource Center and by contacting militarybenefits@georgetown.edu.
Partner Institutions
Students may apply to complete their studies in a joint M.D./Ph.D. program at Georgetown University School of Medicine, or conduct dissertation research at the National Institutes of Health through the GU-NIH Graduate Program.
Need-Based Aid
Grants and loans can help you cover the costs of your degree. Visit the Office of Student Financial Aid website to learn about financing your graduate education.
You will apply for need-based aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your aid package will be posted to your GU Experience account, at which point you can accept or decline any available funding.
For more information or assistance with the financial aid process, contact osfsgradfinaid@georgetown.edu.
Funding for Current Ph.D. Students
Many BGE Ph.D. students receive awards from the university and outside organizations, both in support of their work and in recognition of their accomplishments. As a current student, you should consider applying for awards that can help you to recoup research costs and advance your career.
