Sona Vasudevan, director of the M.S. in Systems Medicine program, is an editorial board member of a new open-access journal, Network and Systems Medicine. The publication will explore the integration of network and systems sciences in medicine, using AI technology to better understand the development and mechanisms of disease.

“A disease is rarely a consequence of an abnormality in a single gene, but is [instead] caused by the perturbations of a complex intracellular network within a human cell,” Vasudevan said. “Application of these principles are essential to identify new disease genes and to uncover the biological significance of disease-associated mutations, ultimately leading to the identification of drug targets and biomarkers for complex diseases. [We wanted] to create a platform for scientists around the world to share their research and hence created a journal that is free of cost.”

Network and Systems Medicine invites researchers to submit mini-reviews, opinion pieces, and research articles pertaining to network and systems biology, precision medicine, bioinformatics, and more. Given the clinical translational goals of the journal, the editorial board also encourages submissions from clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Vasudevan hopes the accessible nature of the publication will facilitate communication and innovation. “Creating an open-access journal in 2025 is not just a desirable option but an increasingly essential step towards a more open, equitable, and impactful scholarly communication system,” she said. “By embracing open access, we can accelerate the pace of discovery, promote inclusivity, and ensure that research benefits society as a whole.”
