Special Master’s Program in Physiology & Biophysics
About Katie
Katie is from Washington, D.C. Before coming to Georgetown Biomedical Graduate Education, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a minor in chemistry from the University of San Diego.
How do you hope your graduate studies will build on what you learned as an undergraduate?
As an undergraduate student I learned the foundations of biomedical sciences. I hope my graduate studies at Georgetown allow me to develop the skills necessary to understand advanced biomedical concepts as well as the strategies to apply these concepts to clinical scenarios. I hope to eventually utilize these strategies in my career as a healthcare professional.
Why did you choose the Georgetown Special Master’s Program for your graduate studies?
I chose the Special Master’s Program because of its preparation for medical school. Through medical school courses, extensive advising on medical school admissions, and endless networking opportunities, the Special Master’s Program sets up its students for success.
What do you want to do after earning your degree?
After earning an M.S. in Physiology & Biophysics, I plan to attend medical school and train to be a surgeon.
If you could meet one scientist, who would you want to meet and why?
If I could meet any scientist I would love to meet Virginia Apgar. Apgar studied medicine at Columbia University and after completing a surgical residency became an anesthesiologist before beginning research. Most prominently known for inventing the Apgar score to assess a newborn’s health, she was a pioneer for obstetrics research. She is an inspiration to women aspiring to become doctors or researchers.
