As a BGE student, you may request a leave of absence in several circumstances:
- I received a U.S. military order.
- I need to take time off to receive medical treatment.
- I need to take time off in connection with the birth of or full-time care of a new child.
- I need to take time off for other reasons not listed above.
- I am a doctoral graduate assistant and need to take time off.
U.S. Military Leave of Absence
Request time off from your studies because you are called to active duty or active service in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces for more than 30 consecutive days. See the complete U.S. Military Service Leave and Re-Enrollment Policy, which also addresses financial policies.
Process: Talk to your program, and fill out the Leave of Absence Form and submit it to your program for the next steps. Attach a copy of your military orders or other documentation to the Leave of Absence Form.
Medical Leave of Absence
Request time off from your studies to receive medical treatment. See the complete Medical Leave of Absence Policy.
For physical ailments, you must supply an official letter from your health care provider to the Student Health Center (SHC). The SHC will then submit its official letter to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS). Please provide the SHC with Maria Snyder as the Academic Dean to receive this letter.
For psychiatric reasons, you must schedule a consultation with Dr. Jade Sanders (firstname.lastname@example.org or 202-687-0369) from Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS). CAPS will submit its official letter to GSAS. Please provide CAPS with Maria Snyder as the Academic Dean to receive this letter.
Please Note: An approved Medical Leave of Absence will pause the student’s time to complete degree requirements and to graduate; however, a student may not graduate while on a Medical Leave of Absence.
Parental Leave of Absence
Request time off from your studies in connection with the birth of or full-time care of a new child during my period of enrollment. See the complete Parental Leave Policy.
Please note: It does not extend the length of time permitted to complete degree requirements and to graduate.
Personal Leave of Absence
Request time off from your studies for reasons that are not listed above. See the complete Personal Leave of Absence Policy.
Deadline: Submit the Leave of Absence Form to your program by the add/drop deadline of the semester in which you plan to take the personal leave.
