Commencement: Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that this information may change to reflect updates from the Office of the President or the Office of the Provost.

Applying For Graduation

  1. Log in to MyAccess.
  2. From the main menu, select the Student tab.
  3. Click on Student Records.
  4. Click Apply to Graduate.
  5. Select the appropriate program or degree.
Dual/joint degree students will have the option of which degree they will be applying for. If a student is applying for two degrees at once (e.g., MPP/MA-ECON) the student will have to apply for each degree separately. A student may not apply for both degrees at one time.
  6. Select the month in which you want to graduate.
  7. Click Continue.
  8. Identify whether or not you will be attending the commencement ceremony.
  9. Click Continue.
  10. Select the name you want to appear on your diploma.
If the name already listed is NOT the name you want to appear on your diploma, select “New” and enter your name as you want it to appear on your diploma. If your name has special characters (accent marks, etc.) please email us.
  11. Click Continue.
  12. Select the address to which you want your diploma mailed. If the address you want is not currently listed, select “New” and enter the appropriate information.
  13. Verify the information you have entered. If everything is correct, click “Submit Request” to complete the process.

Choose the May 31 date option. Your degree will still be conferred on the day of the Commencement Ceremony.

You must apply to graduate no later than February 1 if you wish to have your diploma available at the Commencement Ceremony and have your name and graduation information printed in the Commencement Book. This early deadline is necessitated by the production schedules of both the diplomas and Commencement Book.

After February 1, you may still apply to graduate until May 1. If you do so, you will still be able to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, but your diploma will not be available at commencement and your graduation information will not be in the Commencement Book.

If you don’t see the “Apply to Graduate” option on your MyAccess, please submit the following information to your program Director of Graduate Study (DGS) and Program Coordinator as soon as you can:

  • Expected Graduation Date
  • Full Legal Name
  • Mailing Address

You will need to adhere to all graduation application deadlines.

The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences does not offer distinctions and honors to graduates.

Diploma & Academic Regalia

To change your address to which your diploma will be sent, please email with your new address.

All graduates participating in Commencement are required to wear the appropriate academic regalia – gown, hood, cap, and tassel. Standard regalia will be available for purchase in the University Bookstore.

You will receive instructions on how to wear your regalia as you line up for Commencement. You can also watch our quick video guide: “How to Put On Your Commencement Regalia.”

2022 Commencement Ceremony for Class of 2022

Friday, May 20, 2022

Yes. Participation in the May Commencement Ceremony is limited to those who have been awarded degrees between August and May of the current academic year. For example, participation in the 2022 May Commencement is for students who have been awarded degrees from August 2021 to May 2022 and who have selected “attend the ceremony” on their graduation application.

This option is only open to master’s students who are in programs that conclude in August as part of the program’s structure. It is not open to students who happen to graduate in the Summer (August). The Graduate School allows expected August graduates to participate in the May ceremony as “walkers”; they are recognized by crossing the Commencement stage but do not receive a diploma at the ceremony.

If you would like to walk, please contact your program’s director of graduate study (DGS) and program coordinator as soon as you can, and before the end of March.

Students who graduate from August will see their names in the next year’s commencement book. For example, the names of students who graduate in August 2022, December 2022 and May 2023 will appear in the 2023 May Commencement book.

For the 2022 Commencement, the university is using MarchingOrder to create individual graduation slides for all students who graduated in August or December 2021 or plan to graduate in May 2022. Therefore, we want all students to be able to upload a high-resolution, professional headshot for a graduation slide to commemorate the event. This slide will have your name, degree and graduation year, and you can download it later to share with your family and friends.

If you do not upload a personal professional headshot, your slide will bear a university image in its place.

To protect the health and safety of the Georgetown University community and our guests, all attendees at indoor Commencement events are expected to be up to date on COVID-19 vaccination or have a medical or religious exemption, though guests will not need to show proof of vaccination or exemption during Commencement Weekend. If you are unvaccinated, please take a COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours prior to attending any indoor Commencement event and stay home if you receive a positive test result.

If you develop symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of your vaccination status, please stay home and do not attend Commencement events in person.

Many Commencement events will be livestreamed. Information on where to tune in will be shared on Georgetown’s website and social media channels prior to these events.

Georgetown University has reinstated an indoor mask requirement on the Main and Medical Center campuses. We will continue to monitor public health conditions on our campuses, as well as COVID-19 community levels in DC and nationally, which will inform any updates to Georgetown’s public health guidelines.

Tickets are not required for the Commencement Ceremony on Healy Lawn; seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Students will be informed during the spring semester if the public health situation necessitates changes to this policy.

Note that if the ceremony is held in McDonough Arena due to rain, tickets will be required. Ticket instructions are sent in emails from
