I have been blessed with really great mentors whom I strive to be like. … One of my main goals in life is to be a mentor for others and inspire them to accomplish whatever they want.

The Georgetown University Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (GU IMSD) is designed to develop a diverse cadre of doctoral scholars prepared for careers in the biomedical scientific workforce. Our incoming GU IMSD Fellows share their interests, career goals, and advice for aspiring Ph.D. students.

About Meghan

Originally from Maryland, Meghan Brandt is pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Georgetown University. She earned her Bachelor’s in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

How did you become interested in your area of study?

My research interests lie in solid-state organics and inorganic chemistry. In undergrad, I was an organic chemistry tutor, and that really showed me how much I love the subject. At the same time, I worked in a solid-state inorganic lab. I am excited to explore the interface of these subjects as I work closer to my thesis research. I was blessed to have great professors who encouraged me to explore my interests and I am looking forward to doing more at Georgetown.

What are you most excited about as you join the GU IMSD program?

I am excited to gain a community that will be invaluable in providing new perspectives and insights into problem-solving and project development. The project development training will be invaluable as I navigate through my Ph.D. program, and the internship training will give me great experience when determining my future career.

How have your previous experiences or background influenced your personal or professional development, interests, or career goals?

I have always loved science and math, and I was lucky that both of my parents were in STEM careers, so I could really see that anything was possible for me. Going into college, though, I had no idea what I wanted to do so I tried taking a variety of classes and opportunities. Through all of that, I found chemistry, which I loved. I befriended some current graduate students and they showed me the option of graduate school, which I took to because I have always loved school and learning. I’m so happy I got to try so many things out because it gave me the clarity that I am on the correct path for my life.

What advice do you have for applicants who want to pursue doctoral programs?

I’d recommend assessing the environment of the program heavily. Who will you be working with/for every day? Do you thrive in a more competitive or collaborative environment? These questions are among the most important to ask because you will be spending the next several years there, and if the environment does not suit you, you will not have the motivation you need to work toward a Ph.D.

How has mentorship impacted your educational/career journey?

I have been blessed with some really great mentors whom I strive to be like. Even my mentors outside of science really encouraged me to explore my dreams and accomplish anything I put my mind to. One of my main goals in life is to be a mentor for others and inspire them to accomplish whatever they want.
