Sara-Katherine Giles

2025 Dean’s Excellence Merit Scholarship Recipient

M.S. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Advanced coursework will deepen my understanding of molecular mechanisms and strengthen my ability to think critically across disciplines, while extensive laboratory work and a semester-long internship will allow me to apply this knowledge to real research questions.

About Sara-Katherine

Sara-Katherine is from Huntsville, Alabama. Before coming to Georgetown Biomedical Graduate Education, she earned a Bachelor of Science from Auburn University.

How do you hope your graduate studies will build on what you learned as an undergraduate?

My undergraduate degree in neuroscience provided a strong conceptual-based foundation, while my graduate studies in biochemistry and molecular biology will build on that foundation through concept-driven coursework and immersive, research-based training. Advanced coursework will deepen my understanding of molecular mechanisms and strengthen my ability to think critically across disciplines, while extensive laboratory work and a semester-long internship will allow me to apply this knowledge to real research questions. Together, these experiences will shape how I approach experimental design, data interpretation, and problem-solving, and will prepare me to contribute meaningfully to biomedical research.

What advice would you give to future BGE students?

I would advise future students in the BGE program to take full advantage of all the opportunities it offers, from hands-on laboratory work to research seminars to BGE social events. Engage actively with the faculty, who are deeply invested in not only your understanding of course material, but in your long-term career development. Seek out research experiences early and take initiative in applying what you learn in the classroom to real scientific questions. Build strong relationships with peers and mentors as this provides invaluable support, guidance, and networking opportunities that can extend beyond time spent in the program. Above all, I would advise future students to approach this program with curiosity and initiative and make the most of every opportunity provided by the BGE program.
