About Celine

Originally from San Diego, California, Celine Ertekin is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience at Georgetown University. She obtained her B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

How did you become interested in your area of study?

My research interests lie at the intersection of neuroscience and molecular biology, especially exploring neurodegenerative diseases and how molecular mechanisms contribute to disease progression. I became passionate about this area during my undergraduate studies by working in a biochemical lab and my neuroscience studies. I am particularly interested in understanding the motor and molecular deficits associated with Parkinson’s disease.

What are you most excited about as you join the GU IMSD program?

I am eager to connect with my peers, faculty, and pioneers in a collaborative and enriching environment. The opportunity to engage in research training and workshops will not only enhance my skills as a student and researcher but also help me grow as a mentor.

How have your previous experiences or background influenced your personal or professional development, interests, or career goals?

While working in a pharmacy during my undergraduate studies, I became fascinated with the medications I handled, sparking my curiosity about how they are developed and their mechanisms of action. This interest, combined with my studies in neuroscience and my time as a post-baccalaureate fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), led me to focus on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.

What advice do you have for applicants who want to pursue doctoral programs?

Reflecting on how past experiences have shaped my journey was crucial for me through the application process. It’s important to be honest with yourself about what drives you and brings you satisfaction. For applicants, I recommend taking the time to understand your motivations and how your experiences have influenced your research interests and career goals. Authenticity in your application will resonate with admissions committees and help you find a program that aligns with your passions.
