Georgetown Continues Strong Growth in NIH-Supported Research Training

Six NIH T32 institutional training grants led by Georgetown University Medical Center investigators have received new or competitively renewed funding this summer, strengthening Georgetown’s support for the development of the next generation of biomedical and health researchers in School of Medicine doctoral programs.

The six grants are part of a broader portfolio of 11 currently funded T32 grants at GUMC. NIH T32 grants provide institutions with funding for structured research training and mentorship for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, helping prepare scientists for careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research.

The recently funded programs span physician-scientist training, cancer population science, aging and Alzheimer’s research, NeuroHIV research, and clinical and translational science.

The awards include the Medical Scientist Training Program (contact PI: Todd Waldman, M.D., Ph.D.), supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (T32GM165247); the Cancer Population Science Training Program (contact PI: Suzanne C. O’Neill, Ph.D.), supported by the National Cancer Institute (T32CA261787); Aging and Alzheimer’s Research Training (contact PI: William Rebeck, Ph.D.), supported by the National Institute on Aging (T32AG071745); and the Training Program in NeuroHIV (contact PI: Italo Mocchetti, Ph.D.), supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (T32NS121780).

In addition, the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS) hosts predoctoral and postdoctoral training programs (contact PI: Kathryn Sandberg, Ph.D.) supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (T32TR005739 and T32TR005456).

The successful new and competitive renewal applications were supported by the Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) team, which works with GUMC investigators on the development and submission of institutional training grant proposals.
