BGE Semester Recap: Fall 2024
The Fall 2024 semester found the Biomedical Graduate Education community busy as always. Students got right to work in classes, labs and internships, honing skills and making discoveries in biomedicine.
Here we’ve listed some of the semester’s most interesting stories about the education, research and accomplishments happening at BGE. Read on to find out what our students and alumni were doing in Fall 2024:
Kicking Off the Academic Year
New BGE master’s students gathered on campus for their Orientations in late August, joining their predoctoral colleagues kicking off a semester of classes, research and service.
Advancing Ideas in Biotech
Biotechnology student Bri Buch won the McDonough School of Business’s Rocket Pitch entrepreneurial competition with her proposal for a diagnostic company focused on detecting Lpa.
Remembering a Dedicated Leader
Alumni of the Pharmacology & Physiology doctoral program – some of whom are now Georgetown faculty – spoke about the legacy of the late Barry B. Wolfe as the department announced a new fund in his name.
Assessing Health Equity Around D.C.
Sara DeLeon, a Biomedical Science Policy & Advocacy student interested in the intersection of genome science and ethical policy, was working on an independent study of local genetic counseling services in collaboration with Georgetown’s Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics (PCCB).
Sharing Research Across Disciplines
Doctoral students from across Biomedical Graduate Education came together to present and discuss their work at the annual Student Research Day, hosted by the Georgetown Medical Center Graduate Student Organization (MCGSO).
Learning About Pharmacology and Mentorship
Gabbi Williams received the university’s prestigious Patrick Healy Graduate Fellowship in support of her studies in the Ph.D. in Pharmacology & Physiology program.
Sharing Their Stories
BGE scholarship recipients and external award recipients wrote about their academic and professional interests and goals, and shared advice for future students.
Biking to Fight Cancer
Months after receiving chemotherapy himself, Tumor Biology M.D./Ph.D. student Brian Weselman pedaled 50 miles in the BellRinger research fundraiser ride.
Safeguarding Health in Space
Students from multiple programs spoke about space radiation and health at the 12th annual Nuclear Security Summit, hosted by the Biohazardous Threat Agents & Emerging Infectious Diseases program.
Teaching the Next Generation
Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience alumnae Charisse Winston (’15) and Chinyere Iweka (’18), both of whom recently secured tenure-track faculty positions, reflected on their career trajectories and how their time at Georgetown continues to shape their contributions to the field of neuroscience.
Congratulations to all our students for finishing the semester! We on the BGE team hope you have a happy and peaceful holiday break, and look forward to seeing you in 2025.
